Dhiggiri Maldive Island

The Maldives Review Rating: maldives star rating maldives star rating maldives star rating (3 Stars)

maldives photoUndoubtedly one of the world's best diving locations for coral reef fans. When we went to Dhiggiri we had a wonderful honeymoon. Friendly faces and fabulous places.

I even learned to dive which is brilliant and everyone should do it. When you swim with a parrot fish for the first time it can be a little unnerving, but once you relax it is utter heaven.

Too hot for me

Lovely holiday but it really was too hot for me so I just couldn't enjoy it.

Honeymoon Island

We went to Dhiggri on our Honeymoon and had the best time ever. I know I still had my 'wedding glasses' on but waking up in a waterbungalow with my new husband made me so happy I wanted to cry. The coral reef is astounding and the fishes are so beautiful too.

Out of Season

November through April is the peak season for tourists visiting Dhiggiri, but if like us you travel out of season you can have the full Maldive experience at a fraction of the cost.

Hangers on

One thing nobody mentions is that because the island is so small, you cannot easily get away from hangers on. The trouble with the maldives is that you really are limited to a very small number of options and so just going to the other end of the island is not going to provide escape from the determined leech who wants to hang out with you. Be careful abount inviting others on to your balcony at the beginning of the week.

Dhiggiri sand

Dhiggiri's beach has lovely soft sand. Those of you who like me prefer the beach to diving will love Dhiggiri too.

Sharks are not a problem

If you don't want to see sharks, that is fine. On the house reef there are no sharks except the occasional baby, and the guides will not take you to a shark location unless you really want them to. I do urge you to go see the Manta Rays.

Dhiggiri

Dhiggiri Island is a beautiful place. Get up early and watch the sun rise from the sea. It is a truly uplifting spiritual experience. The sunsets are spectacular too.

Lionfish are beautiful

We went to Dhiggiri a couple of years ago. The most abiding memory for me was swimming with Lionfish. These creatures are truly beautiful. Totally different to other fish, these majestic creatures cruise the reefs with dignity their elegant fronds, moving slowly like silk scarves.

What we saw underwater

Rays, turtles, dolphins, wrasse, sgt majors, clownfish, stonefish, fragonfish, blennies and about a million others whose names we don't know. Come to Dhiggiri.

Sharks

You dont need to see sharks if you dont want to. Just let the dive school know that you have a shark phobia and they will make sure you dont join boats going out into areas where sharks are likely to be found.

Sharks?

I was thinking of going diving in the Maldives but I don't actually want to meet sharks. I think it would spoil my holiday if I came face to face with one, so should I go somewhere else and if so, where?
